Copa Libertadores and Peruvian futból Update, Feb. 21st

The Copa Libertadores.

Only about 75% of the teams in the tournament have played so far in the Copa Libertadores 2010. But, all three Peruvian teams have played twice, offering a great amount of futból action on the Peru side of things, and miraculously we were able to see two different Copa Libertadores games in Lima this week.

Argintina’s Estudiantes de la Plata won the Copa Libertadores last year and by doing so secured a position in the 2010 Copa Libertadores, regaurdless of how well they fared in their own country. They are the favorites coming into this competition. It seems the best two Argentina teams are not represented in the Copa Libertadores. This may have something to do with the Copa Sudamerica which is know for being the biggest South America (club team) tournament.

The first games of the group stage brought victories for both Universitario and Alianza Lima of Peru. Universitario triumphed over Bolivian Blooming University. Alianza beat Bolivar, also on Bolivian soil, in a 2-1 show at an elevation of 3637 meters (11932 feet.) Unfortunatly for Juan Aurich they were pitted against the reigning champion Estudiantes of Argentina for their first match and were destroyed 5-1. This put Juan Aurich down -4 in their group and a bleak outlook on moving on. Some other notable games… Banfield of Argentina beat Morelia of Mexico 2-1 in Group six action…Argentina’s Vélez Sársfield topped Brazil’s Cruzeiro 2-0 in Group seven play…Sao Paulo FC, Brazil beats Monterrey, Mexico 2-0 in Group Two… So far the Argentina teams are faring well in the group stage, but…

The second set of games played, in the group stage, has been very exciting for us because we were able to see two of the games in Lima Peru. The first was the Universitario game versus Lanús from Argentina, in Estadio Monumental, which Universitario won 2-0. The second was Alianza Lima vs. the Tournament Champions Estudiantes de la Plata of Argentina, and Alianza stomped Estudiantes 4-1 in Alejandro Villanueva Stadium. Check out Jessie’s post about the dual afairs.
Other interesting headlines were: University of Chile got worked triumph over CaracasBanfield is noted rout over visiting Deportivo Cuenca

Also, the Peruvian referrees got a new outfit that is fit to print.

The links in this post are mostly to pages in Spanish, so enjoy what is lost and gained in Google translation. And, keep an eye out in two weeks when I throw together more information about the Copa Libertadores and how the Peruvian teams are doing.

Also, please check out my two flickr pages: Universitario vs Lanús and Alianza vs Estudiantes. Cheers.
