When we left the United States in September of 2009, I left my last remaining bike hanging on a hook in my moms garage. I have longed for its touch ever since. I had, in the months prior our departure, been living with Jessie in her 400 sq foot studio with three bicycle of mine and one of hers. Well, our marriage and our new living arrangements (backpacks), reduced me to selling my two track bikes. So I focused my longing for my remaining bike by trying to capture their usefulness and importance to the local communities all around Peru. And, thanks Jessie for waiting for me every time I want to take "another" bicycle photo.

While based in the surfing village of Huanchaco for six weeks, we volunteered in Trujillo for a organization called Fairmail. Fairmail produces postcards and the kids produce the pictures for them. Each person in the program gets a cut of the postcards sold with their photo on them. Fairmail puts the money in a special account for each kid and dispenses it properly. Some kids help out their families and others buy surf boards. They are learning how to survive in a vicious world.

While based in the surfing village of Huanchaco for six weeks, we volunteered in Trujillo for a organization called Fairmail. Fairmail produces postcards and the kids produce the pictures for them. Each person in the program gets a cut of the postcards sold with their photo on them.
The job requirements were to be able to work for a minimum of 8 weeks and be fluent in Spanish. We had five weeks and I knew Gracias and Por Favor. In the end they needed a teacher and were willing to give us a shot. So, Jessie translated and played good cop and I devised lessons and pushed them to take better photos (bad cop.) There were eight kids that ranged in age from thirteen to sixteen. The older ones were obviously better and the younger ones lacked inspiration. So, we enphasized content in the photo, simple design, and getting out there and takeing lots of photos. I was very happy to see that after five weeks the youngsters were taking action and the older students were refining their skills. So, here is to the Fairmail kids and their great photos. All of these photos were taken by the kids of Fairmail in a 5 week period. Check ‘em out, help ‘em out.

In the last leg of the drive from Huaraz to Vaqueria we passed by two blue-green lakes just before we climbed the big pass. Along the way we passed a large supply truck with ease and sped to the top. Thanks to Galaxy Trekking for providing us with a good driver and vehicle as well as great guides and equipment.

By the end of Day One, it had sprinkled all day and was starting to rain. We set up camp quick and quickly realized that the tent they had given us needed different poles than the ones supplied. After 20 minutes of the group therapy session known as “putting up a tent together,” we all agreed that it was messed up. So, our guide slept in the cook tent and we got the remaining two person tent. The evening was cold, windy and full of bugs that were hungry for man flesh. We weathered this out with a deck of UNO cards that Miguel had miraculously brought with him. It saved the trip.

The second day was the combination of the best and worst of the trek. The day was long and we started climbing early. The last push for the pass really gets you in touch with your insides and how far up they can go. It’s marvelous and merciless. The walk down from the pass was just that: Down. Combine that with the gathering amounts of oxygen in the air, and we were elated and I myself was inspired. Everything here is gorgeous from the rocks to the bushes to the snow.

We wrapped this journey up at the base of a huge waterfall, where we stayed our last night. We arrived early and spent the rest of the day hanging out in the sun and climbing up to the waterfall. Along the way we reached a small store that was powered by a small windmill and had beer. BEER!!! After three days taming the wild, (maybe it was the other way around) we bought beer and put it in the river. A perfect ending to a great trip with good people and moderate weather.

For the last four months we’ve heard nothing but complaints about the amount of people at Machu Picchu. So when Mom and Dad wanted to go, we decided just to rent it out for ourselves. It really wasn’t difficult at all, since everyone in the Peruvian government is a fan of KnK Explore. Thanks to everyone out there who helped make this possible!

We arrived early via our private helicopter, thus bypassing all the protesters and lines of tourists who were unable to enter the site. The roar of the helicopter and the soft blanket of morning fog blocked out their screams of anger as they banged on the gates.

We wandered through the residential area, snapping photos vacant of people wherever we pleased. We noticed that it had started to rain downhill, on the protesters, but for us it was a beautiful, clear day.

What a wonderful day we had, picnicking in the empty ruins with only llamas as company. As the day came to a close we hailed our private pilot, who flew us past the drenched, screaming protesters to our private resort. Hope you enjoyed the day, Mom and Dad. We worked hard to make it a flawless one! And by the way, the bill for the helicopter and resort are in the mail.

Guidebooks call Trujillo one of the most colonial cities in Peru. Founded in 1534, Trujillo has managed to preserve many of its Colonial- and Republican-era homes, the Casonas Antiguas. Some of these Stately Old Homes have been preserved as museums, some restored for use as banks, some gutted and reborn as supermarkets, and some are quietly decaying behind locked doors. The best-preserved have been singled out in tourism literature, but the city’s history is not contained in these monuments only.

Here is a quick photo essay about Trujillo’s colonial past. Check out Jessie’s blog post about our wanderings.
